Talk about a LOT of mirrors!!

The image is a view of the Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System (SEGS) – owned by NRG Energy, Google, and BrightSource Energy.  It uses a solar tower technology to produce solar electricity.  This complex, when finished will provide electricity to about 140,000 homes.

Upon completion, Ivanpah will be the largest solar THERMAL power system in the world.  This is not your normal ‘soak up the sun solar panel’ type of electricity production.  The Ivanpah ‘Solar System’ will consist of more than 300,000 mirrors directing the sun’s energy toward three towers, creating 392 megawatts of electricity. The focused sun rays will heat up a tower containing water which will turn to steam. The steam will be used to then spin a turbine which will generate the electricity. Located in Ivanpah Dry Lake, California, the electricity power system is built on approximately 3,500 acres of public desert land.
